Jagdish Mali was one of the most celebrated Indian film and fashion photographers of the 1970s. He is best known as the father of popular Bollywood actress Antara Mali. In his career of over three decades he worked with almost all the big names of the film industry like Rekha, Shabana Azmi, Anupam Kher, Manisha Koirala, Jaya Bachchan and Irfan Khan.
Born in 1954, Jagdish Mali began working as a photographer from a very young age. His first images were of Jaya Bachchan which was published later by the Filmfare magazine. Mali worked as a photo editor with Cineblitz magazine for about thirteen years. He was not a trained photographer, but later took photography courses after some of his works were published already in a reputed film magazine. Jagdish Mali apart from working in films also worked in number of advertisements and also launched models.
Jagdish Mali was born in to a middle class family on 18th January 1954. His father was an artist and he was brought up in his Bandra east residence in Mumbai. As a child he was not interested in school and studies and aimed to become a professional photographer.
Jagdish Mali started his career as a photo editor with the magazine Cine Blitz in 1980. He worked with the magazine for about thirteen years. During this period he worked extensively with popular Indian actress Rekha. His photographs of the actress also featured on the cover of the magazine Cine Blitz. Some other notable shots of Mali include the picture of actor Aamir Khan for his movie Ghulam, where Aamir is seen in a black and white photograph packing a punch. Kavita Radheshyam, social activist and actress also credits her career’s launch to Jagdish Mali. The work of Mali has often been appreciated and compared with his peers like Ashok Salian and Rajadhyaksha.
Mali worked with various celebrities that ruled the Hindi film industry between the 70s and 90s like Shabana Azmi, Jaya Bachchan, Rekha, Nina Gupta, Manoj Bajpai, Kareena Kapoor, Om Puri, Anupam Kher, Irrfan Khan and Manisha Koirala. During the late 80s and early 90s, Jagdish Mali shot ad campaigns for different big brands in India like Parag Sarees, Roopam and Colgate.
Ill Health and Death:
Jagdish Mali was suffering from liver cirrhosis since a very long time and was also a high blood pressure and diabetes patient. He was admitted in Nanavati hospital, Mumbai on 1st May 2013 for a hip fracture. But as per reports he breathed he last on 13th May 2013 due to multi-organ failure. He was 59 years old at the time of his demise. His last rites were performed at the Shivaji Park Crematorium in Mumbai.
